White, Mercury-free Fillings

Feb 26 • 1 minute read

What is a Composite Resin (White Filling)?

Many of us have had amalgam (silver) fillings. These metal fillings were effective but were also conspicuous and tended to darken in color over time. Amalgam fillings also contained mercury. (Though fillings containing mercury have never been proven to be a health hazard, some patients just prefer to avoid mercury if possible.) Dentists now have an alternative to metal fillings. Composite resin fillings are made of plastic dental resin and are colored to look like a natural tooth. These restorations are strong, durable and make for a very natural looking smile.

What are the advantages of composite fillings?

Composite fillings bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure. This helps prevent breakage and further damage to the tooth. Dr. Lobrot can blend shades to create a match that is nearly identical to your real tooth. Unlike metal fillings, composites won’t create a gray shade in your tooth.

What are the disadvantages?

Composite fillings require a little more time to apply. Consequently, they are slightly more expensive. Some insurance companies will only cover the cost of a silver filling and the patient is responsible for the difference. Also, if a patient drinks tea or coffee, the shade of the composite might change slightly.

Will my insurance cover composite fillings?

If you are diagnosed with a cavity or your old metal filling has become cracked or broken, most insurance companies will cover the cost of a composite filling.(Some will only cover the cost of a silver filling and the patient must make up the difference. This is usually about a $15 – $20 difference.) If you simply want to have your old metal fillings removed and replaced with composite fillings to create a whiter, more aesthetic smile, this may be considered a cosmetic procedure and might not be covered by your insurance.
